The heather moorland of Simonside Hills is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and has also been awarded a European International Designation as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). A popular Forestry Commission walking route takes you through the forest, up along the moorland and over the crags at the top.
