In nulliparae it constitutes about one-half the length of the uterus, while in women who have bornechildren its relative length is less and that of the body cervix pierces the vaginal vault obliquely backward anddownward, the vaginal wall being attached to it in a line about5 mm. in Fig. 13.—Anterior surface of nulliparous uterus. (After Edgar.) That portion of the cervix superior to the line of the vaginalattachment is known as the supra-vaginal cervix; that portionprojecting into the vagina as the portio-vaginalis or infra-vaginal cervix. The anterior surface of the supra-vaginal portion has noperitoneal coat and is in relation with the posterior surface ofthe bladder to which it is loosely attached by connective tissue. THE UTERUS 29 The posterior surface of the supra-vaginal cervix is coveredby peritoneum and faces the recto-uterine excavation. The infra-vaginal cervix points toward the posterior vaginalwall and the hollow of the sacrum. The posterior lip of theinfra-vaginal cervix is longer than the anterior. Just abovethe vaginal attachment, upon either side of the posterior wall,is found the uterine attachment of the recto-uterine Ugament.
