As the cable machinery was put in operation whilethe building was still far from completion, the engineshad to be run and the complicated work of cable stationoperation carried on actually under canvas spread forprotection against the falling bricks and mortar of thebricklayers at work. In spite of these adverse conditions,it is a fact which speaks well for the railway companys. J. D. The Broadway & Seventh Avenue Railway is leasedto the Metropolitan Street Railway Company, a corpora-tion recently formed; being a consolidation of the Hous-ton Street, West Street & Pavonia Ferry, the Broadwayand the South Ferry Railroad Companies.
