African violet leaf surface (Saintpaulia ionantha), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The upper leaf surface contains numerous glandular and non-glandular trichomes (hairs). Shown here are numerous short (and one long) multicellular, non-glandular trichomes. Small glandular trichomes (round) are seen apposed closely to the leaf surface. These trichomes serve as a protective function against pests and also helps to reduce leaf evaporation. Magnification: x22 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
