He was promoted to captain in1855; and in October, 1861, he pro-ceeded, in command of the South Atlanticsquadron, to capture Port Royal Island,on the South Carolina coast, to securea central harbor and depot of supplies onthe Southern shores. In July CommodoreDupont was made a rear-admiral, and inApril, 1863, he commanded the fleet whichmade an unsuccessful efiort to captureCharleston. Admiral Dupont assisted inorganizing the naval school at Annapolis,and was the author of a highly com-. SAMtlEL FRANCIS DUPONT. mended report on the use of floating bat-teries for coast defence. He died in Phila-delphia, June 23, 1865. Duportail, Louis Lebegue, Chevalier,military offieer; born in France in 1736;came to America in the early part of theEevolutionary War, and was appointedbrigadier-general in the Continental armyin November, 1777, and major - general,November, 1781. He was directing engi-neer at the siege of Yorktown in the fallof 1781. Returning to France, he wasnamed mar^chal-Uc-camp; and in Novem-ber, 1790, was made minister of war. InDecember, 1791, he resigned; and whenengaged in military service in Lorraine,he received a warning of the designs ofthe Jacobins, and sought safety in 164 America. He died at sea in 1802, whenreturning to France. Dupratz, Antoine Simon Le Page, ex-plorer; born in Tourcoing, France, in1689; settled on the Mississippi Riveramo
