Thepaternal grandfather. William Ramsay, was acoal miner, who spent his entire life in his na-tive country. The maternal grandfather, Rich-ard Heckels, was manager of mines in Ramsay, Jr., father of our subject,was also manager of a mine and died when hisson George was but eight years of age, he hav-ing at that time reached the age of forty-fivevears. Following the death of her husbandI\Irs. Ramsay came to the Ignited States withher familv of seven children, making her wayto Illinois in 1863, at which time George was eighteen years of age.
