Betty Gillies (1908-1998). Historical portrait of the US aviation pioneer Betty Giliies sitting on the wheel of an aeroplane. Gillies was the first pilot to qualify for the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron, later amalgamated into the Women Airforce Service Pilots. Both were pioneering organisations of civilian female pilots employed to fly military aircraft under the direction of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.
