Locomotive text for engineers and firemen; a complete treatise on the engine, electric head-light and standard code of train rules . ficient to dent or springthe cage in which the check-valve operates. Theopening of the frost cock will relieve the pressurefrom forcing its way into the injector to the extent thatthe injector will prime, after which the injector may beput to work and the water entering the boiler will usuallyremove the cause for the check remaining off its seat, after which the frost cock will be closed. The method ofreseating the check-valve as described is applicable totype of boiler check shown in Plate 7. In the event that the check-valve cannot be reseatedor the injector started by the methods previously de-scribed, it will be necessary to close the heater andwater-valve to prevent the heated water from blowingback into the tank, causing the water to become over-heated. If the water-valve will not close tightly, it willbe necessary to disconnect the hose from the feed pipeand open the heater cock, allowing the hot water to blowinto the atmosphere instead of into the tank. If the BOILER CHECKS. 67. 68 SIPHON TANK opposite injector will not supply the boiler under theseconditions it will be necessary to put the train on thefirst siding and fill the boiler, reducing the steam pressure, after which the delivery pipe can be disconnected at thecheck and the valve then be reseated with the use of asuitable rod which can be inserted into the check-valvecase and under the valve. On some classes of engines the frost cock is tappedinto the lower part of the check casing (Plate 7), inwhich case the frost cock can then be taken out and arod inserted under the check, raising the check fartheroff its seat and allowing the foreign matter to be blownfrom its seat. Under similar circumstances where thereis a boiler check with stop valve, as shown in Plates 8and 9, this valve should be closed, which will preventthe hot water from flowing into the injec
