And this picture, TheAvenue, gives us a clear idea of the approachto Middelharnis as it appeared in the late sum- mer of 1689, when Hobbema is supposed tohave painted it. It is a portrait of a bit ofnature, whereas Claudes picture—you mightguess it from the title, Landing of Cleopatraat Tarsus—illustrates the use of nature tobuild up an imaginary composition; the bor-rowing from many sources, and the arrange-ment of the details to produce a scene whichthe artists imagination has conceived to beideally beautiful.
