At the momentwhen Longstreets columns were advancing, about 11 a. m.,the battle on Thomas front was progressing furiously, andGeneral Wood received from Rosecrans the famous, much-discussed order to close upon and support Reynolds, inresponse to which he promptly withdi-ew the three brigadesunder his command from the line, marching b) the leftfiank, passing in rear of Brannon to find Reynolds.
