Tornado steam locomotive in BR blue departing Grosmont Station on North York Moors Railway, blasting steam from cylinder pipes

There were originally 49 A1 Peppercorn class locomotives built, all of which had been scrapped by 1966. A charitable trust, the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, was founded to build the 50th member of the class, 60163 Tornado, albeit with modern additions which would allow it to run on modern mainline tracks. It was built in the Darlington works owned by the trust and was completed by 2008. Between November 2012 and October 2014 it was painted in BR express passenger blue.
