Fig. 318 shows this principle very well except-ing that the bracket isstrengthened by means ofa couple of rods whichpass under the fire boxand are correspondinglyattached to the bracket onthe other side. This is avery simple method, buthas some side bracket is at-tached only to the waterleg of the boiler, while thetotal weight of the engine FIG. 318—BRACKET FOR SIDE- i i M • ^i MOUNTED ENGINE ^nd boilcr IS throwH. TRACTION RNCINKS 439 upon it. It is ob\ioiis that this puts undue strain uponthe boiler shell at a point where it is the weakest. Theweight of the boiler and the engine is thrown upon thesebrackets and in such a manner that it has a tendencyto throw the inside of the axle down and the outside will tend to throw the tops of the drive wheels to-gether and the bottoms apart. The weight is also throw^nupon these axles so that that part of the hub of the fly-wheel next to the engine will wear faster than the -middle,and as a result the wheels will tend to become wobblyin action and wear the teeth of the transmission gearingunevenly. A truss bar similar to that of Fig. 318 re-moves a great deal of the strain from the water leg, and
