In fitting up the osmometer a circle of parchment paper, the OSMOTIC PRESSIRK OF COi,I,()II)\L SOLUTIONS 49 exact size of the platinum grid, is cut out from a sheet, thoroughlywetted, and applied to the grid, which is then placed in position andthe apparatus screwed tight. Any leakage is then tested for by puttingthe osmometer in a vessel of water, blowing air in, and observingwhether any air bubbles appear. In order to prevent blowing the. Fig. 2. The chamberon the upper, or colloid, side is first filled with the solution, in whichthe pressure of colloid is to be measured, by means of a narrow tubedpipette, and the proximal limb of the mercurial manometer, whichis of narrow^ bore, as also the connections and funnel on the manometerside (see Fig. 2) having been previously filled with the solution, orvvith oil, and clipped oft at the end to be connected to the osmometer, the osmometer and tubing are joined. Care should be taken to avoidinclusion of air in making the connecti
