An underground tunnel dug by the Canadian Corps to disguise their successful surprise attack on Vimy Ridge in April 1917

In the build up to the assault on Vimy Ridge, held by the German infantry, the allied armies comprising British and Canadian divisions were aided by tunnels dug up to the front lines. Some were used to deliver mines under the German trenches but other were used to provide cover for troops right up to the front line. This is a photograph taken today showing the length of one of the remaining tunnels.
