His parentswere earnest members of the Baptist church and his early inclination toenter the ministry of the gospel was encouraged by them. He was sentto a theological seminary at Chicago and after completing the course therewas ordained a minister of the Baptist church, which ministry, ever a laborof love to him, he maintained for many years, or until his virtual retirementshortly after the death of his wife in 1905, the loss of his faithful andvaluable helpmate having left him much shaken. During the Civil War,the Rev. Christopher served for one year, toward the close of the war, as asoldier in the Union army, his service having been performed with an Ohioregiment.
