Ankle joint anatomy. Artwork of a rear (posterior) exploded view of some of the bones and cartilage of the human foot and ankle. The ankle joint has been pulled apart into five portions. At top are the lower leg bones, the tibia (thicker bone) and the fibula. At lower right is the calcaneus (heel bone). At centre is the talus bone (ankle bone), with which the tibia and fibula articulate. At lower left are the rest of the foot bones, showing the rear surfaces of the cuboid (left) and navicular (right) bones. The surfaces of the joints are covered in a form of hyaline cartilage called articular cartilage (white) that protects the bone surface from wear and tear.
