A memorial statue of a local Boer War hero: Sgt Fred Wylie stands in the gardens of the Government Gardens in Rotorua, a town on the shore of lake Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island, in the Bay of Plenty region. Within the gardens is the English-styled Mock Tudor building, the former Great South Seas Spa Bath House built in1908, The bath house was the first major investment in the New Zealand tourism industry by the government. Rotorua also attracts tourists from around the world for its renowned geothermal activity and Maori culture at the nearby Te Puia’s Whakarewarewa Valley which is also home to New Zealand’s only living Maori village and the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, with traditional wood carving and weaving schools.
