Major-General Peter Joseph Osterhauswas born in Coblenz, Germany, in 1823, and servedas an officer in the Prussian army. He came toSt. Louis, and in 1861 entered the Union army asmajor of volunteers. Later, as colonel, he had abrigade in the Army of the Southwest, and at PeaRidge he commanded a division. Passing into theArmy of the Tennessee as brigadier-general ofvolunteers, he commanded divisions in the Thir-teenth and Fifteenth corps, taking part in the 2201.
