Petri dish culture of Tricophyton mentagrophytes (variety granulare), one of many species of fungus causing ringworm in animals & humans. The culture is seen here after three weeks growth on Sabouraud dextrose. Ringworm (medical name Tinea) is a name given to a collection of infections on the skin, in particular the scalp, feet (athelete's foot) and occasionally the nails. It is highly contagious and often picked up from infected dogs and cats. It is treated with antibiotics such as griseofulvin.
