Itis an old Spanish town, and has somefine gardens, fruit-trees, &c. The cli-mate is considered very fine. Fromeight oclock in the morning to four inthe evening the sun has great power,and the themiometer rises up to eightyand ninety degrees. The whole day afine breeze is blowing, so that personsin the shade are very comfortable; butin the sun it is sometimes four oclock it gradually becomescool, sometimes making a fire necessaryfor comfort; indeed, generally a littlefire after dark is pleasant. The sky is ever bright, exceptwhen fogs occasionally arise during thenifht; but when they do, the morniugsun soon dispels them. San Jose, from its pleasant and healthylocality, will probably become the resi-dence of many wealthy families who dobusiness elsewhere. Many gentlemen,merchants of San Francisco, have al-ready purchased residences here. SanJose hns daily communication with SanFrancisco, by stage and steamer. Arailroad between the two places has alsobeen projected. Monterey, the ancient capital of AltaCalifornia, is about one hundred milessouth of San Francisco. The situationof the city is admirable. The housesare built on a broad, gentle slope oflaud, about two miles from Point Pinos,the southern end of the bay of are scattered over an extent ofthree
