In 1863 he waschairman of the investigating committeewhich considered the case of Simon Cam-eron, charged with bribing members of thePennsylvania legislature, to secure his elec-tion to the Lnited States Senate. Mr. Kainewas a candidate for president judge of thisjudicial district in 1865, but was was elected a member of the Pennsylva-nia Constitutional convention in 1872 andserved with distinguished abilitv as chairmanof the judiciary committee. In 1874 he wasa candidate for lieutenant governor of theState, but was defeated in the convention, as-sembled at Pittsburg.
