Lower Shavlo Lake. Peaks Skazka, Krasavitsa, and Mechta. The North-Chuya Ridge, Altai, Siberia, Russia
Some of the most beautiful lakes of Altai, Shavlo Lakes, are situated at an altitude of 2000 meters in the North-Chuya Alps at the junction of the three main mountain chains that form the mountain junction Bish-Iirdu. Traditionally both lakes are called Shavlo: Upper and Lower. But in fact there are several smaller lakes at the foot of Shavlo Glacier. Streams flowing down from Shavlo Glacier creating moraines have formed Shavlo Lakes. At the beginning of summer due to the intense melting of the glacier the water in the lakes is turbid but by August it becomes turquoise. A forest of Siberian Pine and larch surrounds the right bank of the lower lake. The left bank is full of rocky scree. The Upper Lake is surrounded by larch. The Shavlo River flows out of Lower Shavlo Lake. The first explorers came to the lakes in 1924. They were Mikhail and Boris Tronov. Peaks Skazka (Fairy Tale), Krasavitsa (Beautiful) and Mechta (Dream) reflect in the lakes like in a mirror. A famous Russian scientist, mathematician and mountaineer, Boris Delone, gave these names to them. He wrote about his impressions during traveling to Shavlo: “Behind the lake there are snow peaks, each of them - a beauty. The highest peak (3800 meters) I named Krasavitsa, the neighboring peak, a steeper, black one, having a trapezium form one, named Skazka”.
