Remains of the winding gear from the Sallie Barber Mine situated in French Gulch above the town of Breckenridge in Colorado.

The Sallie Barber Mine is situated in French Gulch, above the town of Breckenridge in Colorado. It was a small mine opened in 1880 and, by local standards, a relatively long producing one. It primarily produced zinc and also the associated minerals of gold, silver and lead. It had a 305 foot shaft and was mined on three levels. a major problem for the company was the transportation of the ore to a railway spur to be transported for processing. Th the time there was a shortage of railway cars and the Railroad Company wouldn't supply sufficient cars to transport the ore. A local newspaper reported that ore was stacked "everywhere" around the mine waiting to be shipped. The mine eventually proved to be uneconomical and closed in 1911. it re-opened briefly during World War 1 to produce zinc.
