Swollen eyes of a 6-year-old girl with an unknown allergy. Periorbital (around the eye socket) fluid swelling (oedema) can result from an allergic reaction. Many substances can act as allergens, most commonly pollen, animal hair and some chemicals. Inhalation of allergens, or contact with the eyes, provokes an excessive response from the immune system. Typical symptoms include a runny nose and swollen watery eyes. Treatment is with antihistamine drugs that help to reduce the reaction.
