One of the earliest bridges is the one over Nes-haminy Creek in Edisonville, Bucks County, built in first public canal in the country was commenced in 1792 atNorristown and was intended to connect the Delaware andSchuylkill Rivers. During the period from 1791 to 1828, overtwenty-two million dollars were expended by the state and bycorporations on internal improvements. Railroads. To-day 12,000 miles of railroadbring every part of thestate within a few hourstravel of the centers ofpopulation. Minerals; Iron. Ironwas the earliest mineralto be manufactured inthe state. In 1812, itwas found possible to useanthracite in the produc-tion of pig iron. Thevast deposits of limestoneand rich iron ore soon gavethe state
