Humboldt University Main Building. HU opened in style building erected 1748-1753 to plans by Johann Boumann,Unter den Linden,Mitte,Berlin The university was established by Frederick William III on the urging of Wilhelm von Humboldt, Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Friedrich and opened in 1810. It is the oldest of Berlin's four universities and was known as the Friedrich Wilhelm University until its closure in 1945 The university was in East Berlin during the cold war and the Free University of Berlin opened in West Berlin. The university received its current name in honour of Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt in 1949 and their statues stand at the entrance to the main building. The University was sited in Prince Henry's Palace on Unter den Linden boulevard in the historic centre of Berlin. This Baroque- style was built between 1748 to 1753 for Prince Henry of Prussia, the brother of Frederick the Great, to plans by Johann Boumann in Baroque style. The former Royal Prussian residence was converted into a university building in 1809. It was damaged by the Allied bombing
