He chiefly distinguished himself byhis Life and Reign of Richard III. in fivebooks, in which, probably moved by hereditaryattachment, he takes great pains to clear thatprinces character, and even his person, fromthe dark stains which have been impressed up-on them by the body of English histori;;ns. Inthis attempt he has shewn more zeal and learn-ing than judgment; his work being looselyWTitten, pedantic, rhetorical, abounding in use-less digressions and quotations, and rather acontinued panegyric, than a sober historicaldisquisition. It is probable enough that vulgarodium, and adulation to a successor of a hostilefamily, may have overcharged the deformitiesof Richard, and caused some crimes to havebeen falsely attributed to him; but, withoutviolating all
