We did not, however, lose sight of the profits to be derived from dressed poul- try, as about fifty per cent of the product would be males. In order that they should be profitably dis- posed of they must be of a quick maturing breed, possessing the desired qualities for our markets, namely, yellow skin and legs, and round, full breasts. We had these fixed ideas about what we would like in a breed, and also what we would like this breed to pro- duce in the number of eggs laid. How we were to accom- plish all this seemed to us easy at that time, but as difficulties began to present themselves we began to dis- cover that our task was not so easy as it seemed at first. We had been reading for some time about the good practical qualities of some families of White Wyan- dottes, so we decided to adopt that variety for our purpose. We looked up those breeders having in their birds the good qualities that we wanted and bought eggs and stock. Almost from the start we saw the necessity of knowing ust what each bird was doing in order that we could work along the lines we had mapped out. While we were devising some means by which we could record each hen's doings, we spoke to a friend of our plan and he offered to make a nest box which would solve that question for us. I well remember coming home that evening with the box under my buggy seat and my imagination afire anticipat- ing the wonderful results that would follow. The box was placed that night in the pen and early the following morning I was on hand to watch its operation. Although that box was not all that could be desired, it opened to us the grea
