APDK Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya started in 1985 APDK s biggest challenge in Kenya is cerebral palsy Their workshop produces tricycles which are given to disabled people for free Many of them use the tricycles as mobile GSM public telephones as well as having a useful means of mobility for those unable to use their legs Cerebral palsy is on the increase in Kenya with most sufferers living in slums and unable to get appropriate help It is common for parents to think it is a curse Interview with tricycle user Rodah Iminza aged 24 Rodah got polio at the age of two and was cared for by her mother who got her hospital treatment and later took her to APDK where she was fitted with a calliper to strengthen her legs She moved away from home three years ago because she wanted to be more responsible my mother used to see me as a burden APDK introduced her to the GSM public telephone business I am okay now I don t have a lot of problems although sometimes we have to bribe officials its 500 shillings but if they confiscate the phone it can cost 1000 shillings happens about once a month I can pay 3000 shillings in a month This comes from a profit of around 15 000 shillings per month or 500 a day She is now able to support her twin boys through education and although she lives in the slum Rodah is happy
