Putto. 1540–1560. Nuremberg. Lindenwood Hans Peisser was a leading sculptor in Nuremberg during the second quarter of the 16th century. Working in wood and metal, he made numerous and small sculptures and plaquettes as well as larger works, such as carved altars and fountains in brass. This wood sculpture invites comparison with similar figures found on the fountains designed by Peisser for the city of Nuremberg in the 1550s. Unlike Italian artists, who made models for bronze casting out of clay or wax, German sculptors like Peisser frequently carved their models in woods.
