Here may be seen the inevitalile effects, flowingfrom a given cause. No lesson in all the history of thechurch is more clearly taught than this, that a church thatstarves its minister itself perishes of hunger. It appears that a church structure was erected for wor-ship in 1772, some nine years after the first settlement wasmade, and was rebuilt in 1816. and dedicated August 4,1817. Rev. Edmund Pillsbury was ordained November 17,1779, and continued about twenty years. His successor,. HISTOBY OF NORTHWOOI). 545 Rev. Eliphalet Merrill, was ordained December 30,1804, anddismissed 1828. Rev. Ellas Gregory succeeded Merrill in18o2, and he was followed by Rev. George W. Asliby. Mr. Ashby was the son of George Ashby of Salem. Hismother was Nancy Hartwell, married January 12, 1808;j\[r. Ashby was born February 16, 1809, studied at NewHampton, and married, September 12, 18o4, Eliza, daugh-ter of John Batclielder, whose wife was Betsey, daughterof Abraham Batchelder. Mr. Ashby was ordained pastor of the Calvin BaotistChurch in East North wood, September 11, 18oo, and re-mained until 1840. when he went to South Hampton. Aftertwo years he returned to Northwood, and, because of illhealth, purchased a small farm, and supplied such vacantchurches as desired his servi
