German airship LZ-127 Graf Zeppelin returning from its polar expedition in July 1931. During the week-long flight over the Arctic the airship took meteorological measurements, mapped changes in the magnetic field, and meet with the Russian icebreaker Malygin. The meeting was in part to help fund the expedition, as thousands of items of souvenir mail were exchanged and then sold to collectors. The LZ-127 Graf Zeppelin was completed in 1928 and retired in 1937 the day after the Hindenburg disaster. Photographed at Berlin-Tempelhof Airport, Germany.
