Nymph of a common garden katydid (Caedicia simplex) showing wing buds. Sometimes called longhorn grasshoppers, Australia

Nymph of a common garden katydid (Caedicia simplex) showing wing buds. Sometimes called longhorn grasshoppers because they have long, thin antennae, these katydids feed on a range of trees and shrubs. Bodies of nymphs are around 30 mm long, while full-grown katydids can reach 50 mm. Found all over Australia, this one was photographed on the south coast of New South Wales.
