The church held public worship in the yard in frontof the meeting house on the succeeding Sabbath, soonafter which the Government ordered the doors to beagain opened. But they now resolved to use moreeffectual means to crush this infant church. Many ofits members were harrassed, fined, and imprisoned. Itsfirst three pastors were at different times kept in closeconfinement. Mr. Thos. Gould the first pastor formaintaining his own opinions in matters of religion,was imprisoned for nearly three years. But theseprejudices and fears, entertained by the friends of theestablished church, began at length to subside; andin the year 1718, the feeling of toleration had made-.
