Joan of Arc on Horseback
Joan of Arc (1412-1431) said that she followed the counsel of her voices. She was not the first woman visionary of the time; there were men as well. Among the prophecies telling of a maiden who would rescue France are those attributed to Merlin, which placed the maiden armed and on horseback in the middle of the fray. Writing about this prophecy was the Italian Christian de Pisan (1365- c. 1430). This painting is based on the Merlin prophecies.
