Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of Great Britain and Ireland from 1653-1658, (1932). Cromwell (1599-1658) commanded the forces of Parliament during the English Civil War. After the war England, Scotland and Ireland became a commonwealth. Cromwell was head of state as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth from 1653 until his death.
