Tiananmen: The Heavenly Gate of Peace. Tiananmen Square is 880m x 500m which makes it the largest open urban square in the world. Most famous outside of China for the 1989 protests it is a cultural centrepiece of Beijing. Tiananmen itself means the Heavenly Gate, which can be found to the north of the Square and is the entrance to the Forbidden City palace. At the centre of the Square is the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, on the west is the Great Hall of the People and on the east, the Museum of Chinese History.
