Gazi Husrev-begova Mosque Sarajevo Bosnia and Herzegovina
Gazi Husrev-begova Mosque Gazi Husrev-Beg Mosque is the most significant mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The uniqueness of the mosque is expressed through its architectural values, multi-dome system and, for the time it was constructed, very innovative building techniques. Prayer space of Gazi-Husrev-beg Mosque is under a dome that spans 13 meters and is 26 meters high. The extensions on the sides of the mosque are covered with smaller domes and were used by dervish orders. Mihrab is covered with a semidome. The mosque was designed by Adzem Esir Ali, the chief architect of the Ottoman Empire. Ali used the early-Ottoman style in designing the mosque. Numerous rock and glass ornaments are characteristic for the mosque, the arabesque created based on the original after the conquest of Eugene of Savoy (1697), has been destroyed, restored in 1762, destroyed in a fire in 1879 and restored again in 1886. Gazi Husrev-beg mosque remains the most significant edifice from the Ottoman period in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has profoundly influenced the construction of the old part of Sarajevo and the future construction and development of the city.
