The Duomo ( cathedral) of Florence. dating from 1296 and completed in 1436,

The dome of the Duomo in Florence caused huge controversy and many problems for the architects of the day. Existing medieval architecture was not sufficient for the task. A competition was held and a clock maker, Filippo Brunelleschi eventually came up with a solution and the winning design. After much criticism and skepticism the whole thing was completed in the late 1460s, after his death.
