Vergil

This mosaic was uncovered in 1897 during excavations at a Roman villa in North Africa. It depicts the Roman epic poet Vergil, also spelled Virgil, who lived from 70 to 19 , between two Muses—Clio, patron of history, represented by the open scroll and Melpomene, patron of tragedy, represented by the mask.
