Sheaths much shorter than the internodes; ligule about 2 mm. long on the lower leaves, and 5 mm. on tlie upper; blades of sterile shoots seabrid, slender, 20-40 cm. long, those of the culm three, flat or soon involute, the longest 2 mm. wide, the upper one 10-20 cm. long. Panicle ex- serted, loose, slender, 7-12 cm. long; rays mostly in pairs, the longest 2-4 cm. long, bearing a few spikelets near the apex. Empty glumes subequal, oblong, acutish, brittle wlien mature, mostly 3-nerved, 4-5 mm. long; floret pubescent, linear-oblong, hecoming dark brown, about 3 mm. long; callus short and blunt; A awn tortuose, slightly twisted, 9- p,^ Macounii.
