Unfortunately,however, the cable which, as at first em-ployed, was ill adapted to its purpose. lu a?short period it was parted on a reef, and theenterprise was thought by the unhopeful tohave ended in failure. In 1858 the Territory of Minnesota wasorganized and admitted into the Union. Thearea of the new State was a little more thaneighty-one thousand square miles, and its pop-?nlation at the date of admission about a hun-dred and fifty thousand. In the followingyear Oregon, the thirty-third State of theUnion, was admitted, bringing a forty-eight thousand and an area of eighty of Texas, bade adieu to the Senate of theUnited States and retired to private life.
