The hawthorn ( Oxyacanthd) is a small tree branch-ing down to the ground, of a fine conical habit, with dense,dark-colored foliage. The leaves are rather small, obovate;slightly trifid, or pinnatifid. The flowers are numerous,white, sweet-scented, corymbose, on short lateral branchletsalong the main branches. The double white thorn is oneof the finest of lawn trees, and so are, also, the various red flowering ZTrees. & m. mm â mm or scarlet varieties with single or double flowers. Thehawthorns are occasionally grafted on tall stems for speci-men trees, but grown in their natural way they are perhapsstill more effective, with foliage and flowers down to the ground. The commontype is excellent as ahedge plantâin factit is the best plantknown for this pur-pose. All the varie-ties thrive best iu asandy loam.
