Curves, scrolls, obelisks and fins: the distinctive gable with curvilinear slopes and sculptural decoration of Maison Kern, built 1594 in Rhenish or German Renaissance style at Rue du Conseil-Souverain 1 in the historic heart of Colmar, Alsace, Grand Est, France.

Colmar, Alsace, Grand Est, France: the elegant scrolled gable of Maison Kern, built in 1594 at Rue du Conseil-Souverain 1 in the historic heart of the city, is a fine example of Rhenish or German Renaissance architecture. The sculpted gable features curvilinear slopes and scrollwork decorated with curved fins and small obelisks. At the summit, a larger obelisk rises above a central oculus or round window. Inside, the house features stuccoed ceilings decorated with heads and plant motifs. The house is named after a former owner, Georges Kern (1820-1898), President of Colmar’s Société d'embellissement de la ville or town beautification society.
