It will not be ne-cessary to describe a Mexican saddleand bridle, nor will we sketch againthe sombrero, the jacket, pants andenormous spurs of the cavalier. Half way between the statue ofCharles IV. and Chapultepec is acircle, in the middle of which ap-pears the statue of Christopher Co-lumbus ; at this point the view oftwo volcanos in the pink atmosphereof a setting sun is truly grand. Thepalace, which was erected in 1V85upon the very spot which Montezumasplace occupied, is now an astronomi-cal observatory, and, like most public buildings here, is not in the very bestrepair. Still the view is sublime; there in the distance the valley of Mexico, with its lakes and greei waving fields of rich vegetation, its fringe of moun-tains that are veiled in a blue atmosphere, and the various transparent tints. 40 that radiate upon the heavens mists to reflect their colors upon natures flowerybosom. The water supply of Mexico was formerly brought to the city throughthe celebrated aqueduct; now there are water pipes, and the ancient conduitthat afforded a clear and wholesome stream is being removed as an old andincapacitated servant. Molino del Bey lies not far from Chapultepec, let us see that too, and■just beyond lies Tacubaya, a fashionable suburb and countr}^ seat of wealthyMexicans; here we visit the military school which was formerly situated atChapultepec. The city of Mexico is supplied with two kinds of water, namely aguadelgada,^^ soft wsiter, and agua gorda,^^ thick water; the first flows fromsprings in the southern part of the city, near the foot of the mountains; thesecond has its source at Chapultepec. Two very large aqueducts store theagua delgada and agua gorda, one at each side of the city.
