On this island was started in 1898 a cemetery for animals, called La Necropole Zoologicjue. A handsome facade of stone and a gate of grill work in hammered iron, from an original design by the architect of the cemetery, Eugene Petit, give dignity and beauty to the entrance. On the right a picturesque lodge guards the approach to this resting place of fourfooted friends of men and women who have not been ashamed to testify in this public manner to the love and, in some cases, the gratitude they have felt for companions that for a time gladdened their lives, then passed on into the mysterious beyond. Walking along the pathways studying the inscriptions on gleaming stones half buried in ivy and myrtle, and on monu- ments against a picturesque background of shrubs and trees, through which one could catch glimpses of the slow-moving river, there seemed to me to be a special pathos in this spot of ground, and I wondered if those who are most contemptuous about the affection that often binds the heart of mankind with <2!f^.
