Fogarty embolic catheter, a balloon-carrying catheter used to remove an embolus (blood clot) from an artery. The device (balloon inflated) is introduced into the affected artery in a deflated state using angiography (the x-ray examination of an artery that has been oulined by prior injection of a radio-opaque contrast medium). The device is manipulated beyond the embolus & then inflated: the catheter is then withdrawn, carrying the embolus with it.
