Travellers Halted in a Wooded Landscape. With his balanced landscape compositions and crisply drawn figures, Sandby was a source of inspiration for artists such as William Turner and Michael Rooker. Between 1770 and 1800 Sandby produced many watercolours, like this one, that were meant to be framed and displayed. He had to pay for their framing himself. This became a burden, and so he turned to painting in oil after 1800.
