'Christoph Kolumbus 1446-1506', 1934. Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), Genoese navigator and explorer. Sponsored by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, Columbus set out in 1492 to discover a westward route to Asia. He landed on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, claiming it for Spain.
