The Camphor Tree or Cam- phor L.\UREL of China and Japan. This tree and the DriobaJanaps Camphora of Sumatra fur- nish the Camphor gum of commerce. The tree is hardy in the lower Gulf states and in the south of Europe. It is a handsome broad- leaved evergreen. To pi-epare the Camphor of commerce "the root, trunk and branches, broken up, are treated with water in closed vessels, the volatilized Camphor being subli- mated upon rice straw. It is further refined on its arrival in ; A rank growing ornamental tree, thriving in the very jKiorest soil. Has been planted extensivelj' in Florida, and is much sought for.
